Resumen
The educational speech therapy is a performance area that proposes the dialogue between
health and education. The theoretical relationship established between these two disciplines
may (or not) promotes changes on the professional´s presence mode at the educational field.
In this sense, this study, at the light of the historical-critical perspective, aims to know and
analyze the epistemological and theoretical bases that substantiate the practices developed by
the speech therapist in the public and private network of basic education teaching. In this
work, we discuss, based on reports from professionals that work in the educational field, the
professional’s conceptions about the relationship between language and education, the main
practices developed by the professional at the educational field, the perception of the speech
therapist professional about the school failure and the difficulties in the schooling process.
The methodological pathway is characterized by the study of a qualitative nature, from semistructured interviews performed to speech therapist professionals who act (or acted) in the
public/private teaching network of Salvador-BA and inner cities from Bahia. With this study
was possible to observe that the majority proposals for action makes a bond with the
organicist discourse, with strong appeal to the medical clinic procedures, and moves away
from theories about education and language. The practices performed by the professional in
the educational field approximates to the medicalizing and pathologizing view,
individualizing the educational problems, making responsible, for the school failure, as a rule,
the student, the teacher or the family. As to the perception of schooling process, we do not
identify a problematization on the issue. Prevails in the interviewees' discourse a strong
concern on analyze the difficulties of the schooling process as learning problems, and there
were no references to the schooling process as a complex phenomenon that involves
dimensions of the historical, social, institutional and political field. We hope that this study
may forward reflections in the field of educational speech therapy and may reflect on pratices
that are in harmony with the schooling process of children and adolescents.
